NOMAD Puzzler

New feature: Test your knowledge or learn something new

Suppose you want to send an email when a NOMAD procedure running in a batch job completes. Can you do this? If so, how could you tell // that either "Good news! The job to increase my salary succeeded!" if &SALARY_JOB_RC is zero, or "Woe is me! The job to increase my salary failed!" if &SALARY_JOB_RC is non-zero?*

*The answer may be found near the bottom of this newsletter.

Tip of the Month

Creating PDF files in NOMAD

Did you know that you can generate PDF output with NOMAD? You can, and it's quite simple.

For example, suppose you want to create a PDF file with the output from the following request against the sample NEWCMPNY database:

list by type sum(cost);

Then the following procedure will do this:

database newcmpny BLUE;
file define textin = textin data vfile;
list by type sum(cost) on textin;
file define pdfout = my pdf length 1024 create;
transform text to pdf;

The result will be a PDF file named MY PDF on VM, or mvsprefix.PDF(MY) on z/OS. (The mvsprefix.PDF partitioned dataset must be previously allocated.)

But what if I want to email this PDF report? Wait until next month's newsletter, and we'll tell you how to do this!

Note: the UltraQuest product from Select Business Solutions can create a PDF report with the click of a button.

z/VM 6.3 Upgrade

For z/VM sites planning to upgrade to z/VM 6.3

In z/VM 6.3, IBM made changes to the output from the CP INDICATE USER command. CP INDICATE USER is used by the NOMAD TRACE RESOURCES command as part of the UltraQuest and NOMAD Application Performance Analyzer (NAPA). z/VM NOMAD sites with NAPA enabled should contact Select Business Solutions Support and request the patch for C33533 prior to upgrading to z/VM 6.3. To request this patch, please contact support at 888-328-7806, click here to submit an electronic icur, or contact Support at This email address is being protected from spambots. NOMAD Puzzler Answer

Question: How do you send an email when a NOMAD procedure running in a batch job completes?

Answer: Use the NOMAD EMAIL command! So long as your site has an SMTP server configured on the mainframe where NOMAD is running or (with z/OS) on a remote machine, email may be sent from NOMAD.

Sending the email described in the puzzler question simply requires the following NOMAD code:

Setup for z/VM:

file define postman email create;
&SMTPNAME = 'SMTPuserid';

Setup for z/OS:

file define postman alloc'sysout(a) writer(SMTPjob)'

email create;

Setup on z/OS for a remote SMTP server:

file define postman mail data vfile email create;
&smtpserver='nnn.nn.nn.nn';

Sending the email:

&SUBJECT = if &SALARY_JOB_RC eq 0 then

'Good news! The job to increase my salary succeeded!'

else

'Woe is me! The job to increase my salary failed!';

email postman

to //

from //

subject &SUBJECT ;

file clear postman;

Note: the UltraQuest product from Select Business Solutions can email a report with the click of a button.
